Gastroenterology is the branch of medicine dealing with the study of disorders affecting the esophagus, stomach, and the associated organs.
Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD)
During an EGD, a thin scope with a light and camera on the end can view the upper digestive tract, including the esophagus, stomach, and the first part of the intestines. It is usually performed on an outpatient basis to aid in diagnosing digestive diseases.
Colonoscopy
During a colonoscopy, a long, flexible scope with a light and a camera on the end can view the lower digestive tract, including the rectum and the colon. It is usually performed on an outpatient basis to aid in diagnosing lower digestive diseases.
